Brazil name brazilwood red dye colony export

Brazil may take its name from a red-dye wood

Brazil’s name probably came from brazilwood, a tree whose deep-red dye became the colony’s earliest commercially exploited export. The timber trade made “Land of Brazil” popular enough to replace Portugal’s official name for the colony, “Land of the Holy Cross.”
