Painful experiences in premature babies may affect development later
Very premature infants can respond to painful medical procedures while their nervous systems are still developing. Research has linked repeated early pain and stress with later differences in brain development and stress responses. These findings have helped strengthen neonatal pain management, although separating the effects of pain from illness and other factors remains difficult.
