The Columbus flat-Earth story is a myth
The claim that Columbus struggled for support because Catholic scholars thought Earth was flat is false. Earth’s spherical shape had been known since antiquity and was common knowledge among sailors. Washington Irving’s 1828 biography popularized the story, which can be traced to 17th-century Protestant campaigns against Catholicism.
