Complex eyes evolved repeatedly

Animals with image-forming eyes do not share a single evolutionary origin for those organs: complex eyes evolved independently several times. Yet they share an ancient genetic toolkit for eye development, suggesting that evolution repeatedly recruited older light-sensing machinery into optical organs.
