How a pinhole-like eye can see shapes without a lens

A narrower eye opening sharpened vision

A cup-shaped eye did not need a lens to form a true image. As its opening narrowed, visual resolution improved more efficiently than it would have by making the cup deeper. This also allowed limited shape detection without a lens.
