How Ptolemy's geography error made Asia seem closer to Columbus

A geography error helped convince Columbus Asia was close

180° of Earth’s circumference

Ptolemy believed Eurasia stretched across 180° of Earth’s circumference. That made the Atlantic appear much narrower than it really is and helped persuade Christopher Columbus that Asia could be reached by sailing west.
