Snell measured Earth with a chain of 33 triangles

In 1615, Willebrord Snell surveyed roughly 70 miles between two Dutch towns using a chain of 33 triangles. Because the towns were separated by one degree of latitude, that local measurement could be scaled up to estimate Earth’s circumference.
