How Herodotus recorded evidence of Africa's circumnavigation

An ancient sailing story contained evidence its author didn't understand

Herodotus reported that Phoenician sailors saw the Sun to their north while sailing around Africa. He treated the strange observation as evidence for their voyage: seeing the Sun that way is what would be expected after traveling south of the equator.
