Cuba’s 2022 exodus surpassed two famous migration crises

Almost 250,000 Cubans

Nearly 250,000 Cubans migrated to the United States in 2022—more than 2% of Cuba’s population. That exceeded the combined numbers from the famous Mariel boatlift of 1980 and the 1994 rafter crisis. The comparison reveals just how large the more recent wave of migration was.

During the American Civil War, doctors noticed that some wounds containing maggots healed surprisingly well. The larvae ate dead tissue while leaving much of the healthy tissue alone. Maggots were later used deliberately to clean difficult wounds, and the method is still used in some cases.
