Madagascar was settled by sailors from across the Indian Ocean
Madagascar lies just off Africa, yet some of its earliest settlers came from Southeast Asia. They crossed thousands of kilometers of open ocean roughly 1,500 years ago. Their descendants helped shape the island’s language and culture, which still preserve strong connections to Southeast Asia.
