Why colliding continents build mountains instead of subducting

Continents are too buoyant to easily dive under each other

When two continents collide, their crust has similar low density, so neither side readily sinks into the mantle. The collision instead crumples and thickens the edges upward, building mountain ranges such as the Himalayas and Alps.
