A Sufi mystic argued that love mattered more than heaven or hell
Rābiʿa al-ʿAdawiyya, an early Muslim mystic, became associated with the idea that worship should arise from love of God rather than fear of punishment or hope of reward. Stories attributed to her challenge the idea of religion as a transaction. Her teachings helped make divine love a central theme in later Sufi traditions.
