axolotl metamorphosis limb regeneration

An axolotl can lose some of its remarkable regeneration ability

Axolotls usually remain aquatic throughout life, keeping their external gills even after becoming sexually mature. Scientists can induce metamorphosis with thyroid hormones, causing major changes in their bodies. Afterward, their ability to regenerate limbs becomes much weaker. The same animal can have dramatically different healing capabilities depending on its developmental state.
