K–Pg extinction freshwater ecosystems land detritus

Food washed from land may have helped freshwater life survive an asteroid impact

After the asteroid impact 66 million years ago, dust and aerosols reduced sunlight and disrupted photosynthesis. Many food webs suffered, but some freshwater ecosystems had an advantage: streams and lakes could receive dead organic material washed in from surrounding land. That outside food supply may have helped sustain organisms while sunlight-dependent production collapsed.
