sacoglossan sea slugs photosynthesis starvation survival

Some sea slugs steal chloroplasts — but sunlight may not feed them enough

Certain sea slugs take chloroplasts from the algae they eat and keep them functioning inside their own cells. The stolen structures can continue photosynthesizing for weeks or months. Yet experiments suggest that photosynthesis does not necessarily explain how long these slugs survive without food. Their resistance to starvation can matter more than the energy captured from sunlight.
