early farming cereal grasses seed retention selection

Early farmers accidentally bred crops that depended on humans

Wild grasses often release ripe seeds naturally, allowing them to spread. Early farmers were more likely to collect seeds from plants that held onto them until harvest. Replanting those seeds repeatedly favored varieties whose grains stayed attached. Over generations, domesticated crops became easier to harvest but less able to reproduce successfully without people.
