A volcanic eruption may have helped inspire the bicycle
The eruption of Mount Tambora in 1815 contributed to global cooling and crop failures the following year. With food and horse feed expensive, inventor Karl Drais developed a two-wheeled vehicle propelled by pushing against the ground. His 1817 draisine became an important ancestor of the bicycle. Historians debate how directly the food crisis influenced his invention.
