Ancient Greek distinguished vowel sounds that later merged in pronunciation. Modern Greek spelling still preserves many of those historical differences. As a result, several different letters and letter combinations can represent the same sound. A reader can often pronounce an unfamiliar written word correctly but may struggle to spell a word heard aloud.
