Children learn most new words without anyone formally teaching them
Children acquire vocabulary far faster than adults could teach every word individually. They use context, familiar sentence patterns, gestures and repeated encounters to infer what unfamiliar words mean. Direct instruction helps, but much language learning happens during ordinary conversation and observation. Children are constantly solving small puzzles about meaning.
