Antarctica’s dry polar desert preserves meteorites, and dark stones stand out against the ice and snow. Ice flow gathers them in certain areas, making meteorites from the Moon and Mars relatively easy to find there.

A British air raid accidentally bombed a Copenhagen school

123 civilians killed

In March 1945, British aircraft attacked the Gestapo headquarters in Copenhagen. One plane crashed near a school, creating smoke that confused aircraft following behind it. Several crews mistakenly bombed the school instead. The operation killed 123 civilians, including 87 children, even as it struck the intended German target.

European diseases devastated Indigenous populations in the Americas

After 1492, diseases including smallpox, measles and influenza spread through populations with little previous exposure to them. Epidemics contributed to catastrophic mortality across the Americas, alongside warfare, displacement and colonial exploitation. The scale varied greatly between regions, and estimates of the overall population decline remain debated.
