Immune cells can attack when a normal ID badge disappears

Healthy cells normally display MHC I molecules that restrain natural killer cells. Virus-infected and tumor cells can lose those markers. Instead of needing a new foreign signal, natural killer cells can respond to the absence of a familiar “self” marker.
