Tacoma Narrows collapsed far below its design wind speed
68 vs 206 km/h
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapsed in 1940 in winds of 68 km/h despite being designed to withstand winds up to 206 km/h. Investigations found that its designer had not accounted for wind-induced flutter and resonant vibrations.
