Humans were making playable bone flutes more than 35,000 years ago
Archaeologists have found flutes made from bird bones and mammoth ivory in caves in southwestern Germany. Some date back more than 35,000 years, showing that early modern humans were making musical instruments in Ice Age Europe. Older objects have been proposed as instruments, but their identification is disputed. Music-making left physical traces tens of thousands of years before written history.
