Food irradiation kills microbes without making food radioactive
Food can be exposed to controlled doses of ionizing radiation to reduce harmful microbes, insects and spoilage. The energy damages microorganisms, but the treatment does not leave the food radioactive. It is a preservation method, not the same thing as contaminating food with radioactive material.
