Sirius Canopus luminosity distance apparent brightness

Sirius looks brighter than a far more powerful star

Canopus gives off about 14,000 times as much light as the Sun, while Sirius gives off only about 23 times as much. Yet Sirius looks brighter from Earth because it is only 8.6 light-years away. Canopus is about 310 light-years away.

Toxic soils give native plants an edge

New Caledonia has soils rich in minerals that are toxic to many plants. Native species adapted to these soils can grow there, while foreign plants are poorly suited to them. This helps protect native plants from being displaced.
