Cape Town's colonial workforce was built partly through slavery
The Dutch East India Company established a settlement at the Cape in 1652 to supply passing ships. Colonial authorities soon imported enslaved people from places including Madagascar, South Asia and the Indonesian archipelago. Their descendants became part of the region's diverse communities, leaving lasting influences on its languages, food and culture.
