Sargasso Sea European American eel spawning migration

European eels cross the Atlantic to reproduce in the Sargasso Sea

European eels spend much of their lives in rivers and coastal waters, then migrate thousands of kilometers across the Atlantic to spawn in the Sargasso Sea. American eels also reproduce in this region. Ocean currents carry their young back toward different continents, completing one of nature's most remarkable migration cycles.
