Einstein special relativity luminiferous aether

Einstein removed the need for an invisible medium filling space

Nineteenth-century physicists often imagined light traveling through an invisible substance called the luminiferous aether, much as sound travels through air. Einstein's special relativity described the behavior of light without requiring such a medium. Instead, the speed of light in vacuum became a fundamental feature of the theory, changing how physicists understood space and time.
