ancient Greek sculpture painted colors polychromy

Ancient Greek statues were often painted in vivid colors

The white marble statues displayed in museums can give a misleading impression of ancient Greek art. Many sculptures originally had painted skin, clothing, hair and decorative details. Over centuries, pigments wore away, leaving bare stone. Modern analysis can sometimes detect traces of those colors and reveal how different the statues once looked.
