Indian classical music developed two main traditions
In the 13th century, Indian classical music split into the Hindustani tradition of North India and the Carnatic tradition of South India. Hindustani music uses more improvisation, while Carnatic music puts more emphasis on composed pieces. Both use raga and tala systems.
