Paraguay lost a devastating share of its population in one war
The Paraguayan War of 1864–1870 caused catastrophic losses through combat, disease, hunger and displacement. Paraguay's population fell sharply, and adult men were especially affected. Exact figures remain heavily disputed because historical censuses are incomplete and estimates vary widely. Claims that 90% of all men died should not be treated as settled fact.
