Vikings reached North America almost 500 years before Columbus
~500 years earlier
Archaeologists discovered the remains of a Norse settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland. Evidence dates Norse activity there to around the year 1000, centuries before Columbus crossed the Atlantic in 1492. The site confirms that Europeans reached North America long before his voyage, although their settlement did not lead to lasting European colonization at the time.
