Natural-gas production in the Netherlands brought the government hundreds of billions of euros. It also caused earthquakes that damaged housing and weakened the competitiveness of other economic sectors. After public backlash, the government decided to phase out production from the field.

Before widespread cooling, keeping food fresh and indoor spaces comfortable was especially difficult in hot climates. Refrigeration and air conditioning reduced those constraints, while refrigerated transport allowed perishable food to travel long distances. These technologies helped support the growth of large cities in places where heat had previously made everyday life much harder.
