How Tesla's induction motor created a rotating magnetic field

The motor that starts itself

Tesla’s 1887 AC induction motor used polyphase current to create a rotating magnetic field. That field made the motor self-starting, so it needed no commutator or mechanical brushes. Without those sparking parts, the motor also avoided much routine maintenance.
