Photosynthesis helped build Earth’s UV shield

Photosynthetic organisms released oxygen long before complex life occupied land. Some of that oxygen ultimately formed the ozone layer, which absorbs much of the Sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation. Life’s move onto exposed land therefore depended partly on gases produced by organisms already living elsewhere.
