How gravitational wave interferometers detect tiny changes in distance

A gravitational wave breaks the cancellation

The two laser beams in an interferometer normally cancel at the detector. A passing gravitational wave slightly changes the arms’ relative lengths, so the cancellation is no longer complete. Detecting that faint signal requires kilometre-scale arms and exceptionally careful control of noise.
