Black-hole winds can boost or quench star birth

Accretion-driven winds may compress nearby gas and accelerate star formation. But stronger winds can expel most of a galaxy’s gas, suppressing the material available for new stars. The same kind of black-hole activity can therefore either promote or shut down star birth.
