Scientists discovered a microbe that can grow by eating viruses
Researchers found that a freshwater microorganism called Halteria could consume chloroviruses and increase in population when those viruses were its available food. The discovery showed that viruses can act as nutrients within food webs, not only as infectious agents. It also suggested that viral particles may move energy through ecosystems in previously overlooked ways.
