Before England changed its calendar in the 1750s, the year began on 25 March. So Elizabeth I’s death on 24 March was counted as 1602 at the time, but historians date it to 1603 by modern convention.

A thousand Continental dollars equaled one silver dollar

During the American Revolution, Congress and the states issued Continental dollars without a shared money policy, and neither had the means or will to remove the bills. After the currency collapsed, it was replaced at a rate of one silver dollar for 1,000 Continental dollars. The failure helped prompt the Constitution to bar states from making anything but gold and silver coins legal payment for debts.

Spanish rulers both destroyed and reused quipus

Under Spanish rule, some quipus were destroyed because officials saw them as objects of forbidden worship. Other officials and priests instead encouraged people to use quipus for government and church records.
