Egypt depends on a river shared with countries upstream
55.5 billion m³/year
The Nile supplies most of Egypt's freshwater, but its flow originates largely beyond Egypt's borders. A 1959 agreement between Egypt and Sudan allocated Egypt 55.5 billion cubic metres of Nile water annually, without including all upstream countries. Population growth, irrigation demand and new dams have made control of this shared river an increasingly difficult regional question.
