Education and prosperity don’t ensure democracy

Historically, many countries expanded primary education well before they became democracies. Authoritarian regimes can also use education to indoctrinate people and strengthen their power, so schooling does not reliably lead to democracy.

Spain became a major destination for immigrants

Spain shifted from a country people left to a major destination for immigrants. The immigrant share of Spain’s population rose from 1.6% in 1998 to over 12% by 2009. From 2002 to 2007, Spain received more migrants than any other European country.

Rome redirected a Jewish tax to its own temple

After the revolt, Rome required Jews across the Empire, even those who had not taken part, to pay an annual tax of two drachmas in place of the Temple donation. Rome used the money to rebuild and maintain its temple to Jupiter Capitolinus.
