Complex animals predated the Cambrian explosion

Large, varied Ediacaran organisms and preserved traces of their movement show that complex bilaterian animals existed before the Cambrian. The Cambrian explosion therefore appears less like an instantaneous origin of animal life than a later acceleration or expansion of earlier lineages.
