COVID-19 mortality risk differed enormously between age groups
Early estimates of COVID-19's infection fatality risk showed a steep increase with age. Children faced a much lower risk of dying after infection than very elderly adults, although risk also depended on health, immunity and access to treatment. Population averages could therefore be misleading: two places with similar infection counts might experience very different numbers of deaths.
