Children can learn an endless number sequence from one rule
Around age five or six, children can realize that each counting number is one more than the number before it. Once they understand this rule, they do not need to learn every larger number separately. In experiments, chimpanzees instead needed thousands of trials to learn the symbols for 1 through 9 one by one.
