People under British rule fell sharply

Between 1945 and 1965, the number of people under British rule outside the United Kingdom fell from 700 million to 5 million. Three million of those 5 million were in Hong Kong.

Two virus strains can mix parts to create new combinations

Some viruses divide their genetic material into separate pieces. If two strains infect the same cell, pieces from both can end up together in new virus particles. The offspring can therefore have combinations of traits that neither parent strain had.
