Sugar cane reshaped Barbados’s economy and population
Sugar cane arrived in Barbados in 1640. Large plantations expanded as smallholders were bought out, and enslaved Africans worked the plantations. In 1644, about 800 of an estimated 30,000 residents were of African ancestry; by 1660, Black and White residents were near equal in number.
