Britain promised a Jewish national home without consulting Palestine's majority
In 1917, Britain's Balfour Declaration supported establishing a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine while stating that the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities should not be prejudiced. Those communities made up most of the population, yet the declaration did not recognize an equivalent right to national self-determination. The tension became central to the region's subsequent history.
