If AI needs less energy for each task, using it becomes cheaper. People may then use much more of it. The extra use can cancel some or all of the environmental savings from making each individual task more efficient.

The U.S. government can borrow from global markets in dollars at very low interest rates. Governments and companies in some other countries may instead have to borrow in foreign currencies such as dollars, leaving them with higher borrowing costs and more risk if they struggle to repay.
