Your immune system can remember a virus after antibodies decline
Antibody levels often fall after an infection or vaccination, but that does not mean the immune system has forgotten the threat. Memory B cells can persist and respond when they encounter a familiar pathogen again, producing new antibodies. Studies of SARS-CoV-2 found such cells months after infection. Protection also depends on other immune responses, so antibody levels alone cannot tell the whole story.
