Is the nitroplast a newly evolved organelle

Scientists may be watching a new part of a cell evolve

The marine alga Braarudosphaera bigelowii contains a structure called a nitroplast that came from a bacterium able to use nitrogen from the air. The structure now divides along with its host and depends on proteins made by the host. It may show how a once-independent organism becomes a permanent part of another cell.
